My New Life Philosophy

by Vlad Dolezal on April 1, 2009

Update: Happy April Fools!

I have recently been rethinking my life philosophy. And I’ve decided that until now I’ve been completely misguided.

You don’t matter

Our universe is at least 78 billion light years across. If we take a human to be 2 metres tall, then the universe is…

37, 800, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000

… times longer than a human. And that’s only the length. If we compared the volume, the number would have over 3 times as many zeroes.

In other words, you’re insignificant. You don’t matter.

Think about the long term

In self-improvement, there’s a concept of focusing on long term happiness, rather than just short term pleasure. I’ve decided to take that to its logical conclusion…

In the VERY long term (billions of years), there will be no humanity anyway.

Because the universe is constantly expanding, eventually the time will come when everything cools down so much and all atoms will be so far from each other that life will be physically impossible in any form. It might take a couple hundred billion years, but it’s going to happen.

… therefore, there is no happiness in the very long term.

In other words, in the very long term, everything is futile.

Thus I officially announce my retirement from the personal growth industry.

Here’s my new life philosophy:

  1. If it takes effort, don’t do it. Because in the long term, it won’t matter.
  2. Screw other people. They’ll be dead in a century or two anyway.
  3. Live fast. Die pretty. In the long term, nothing matters. You might as well enjoy the now.
  4. Linux sucks. If it can’t save us from total annihilation by an ever-expanding universe, what good is it?

I will be renaming my blog An Unamazing Mind, and from now on I shall preach my message of doomsday and futility!

Care to join my new philosophy?
