Video Post! How to Not Leave Everything Until the Last Moment

by Vlad Dolezal on April 22, 2009

Hey everybody!

This is my first video post, so please excuse that it’s a bit rough around the edges.

I had to cut off a bit at the beginning because of recording issues (so you don’t get to see me say “Hi everybody!”… awwww). Also at one point I say “This is my task…” when I obviously mean “This is my list [of tasks]…”. It made me realize how easy it is to make small edits in a text blog post compared to a single-shot video :)

I hope you enjoy the video!

I enjoy your blog and I think the video is pretty nice, but from a time-use perspective, I am not a video fan. I could have read everything you said in a moment or two. I don’t mean that as a critique of YOUR video. I liked how clear you were and how expressive. It’s just that I have a general preference for the written word. Re: the topic of the video — I can’t seem to work until the deadline is dangerously close. I don’t leave EVERYTHING, but I find I just naturally pace myself so that at the last minute, there’s a mad scramble. I never finish things early. How do I become someone who finishes early, who doesn’t need a deadline to kick them into gear? Second, I don’t ever make to-do lists. Every time I try, I am overwhelmed by the million and one things that I should be doing. I guess I don’t really know how to organize a to-do list. ….I ran across your blog some months ago and I’ve really enjoyed it. I like your sense of humor, your self-mocking tone, and your sincerity.

@Tula:
You’re absolutely right, you can read ideas a lot faster than watching a video. I also personally prefer reading, which is why I’ve been hesitating to use video for so long. But there seems to be demand for this kind of thing, so I’m providing :)

As for the topic of the video… Actually, right now I’m working on an article about why leaving everything until the last moment isn’t ALWAYS a bad thing :) . (I love giving you contradictory points of view. It makes you think.) – so who knows, sometimes you might actually be doing it right :p

And making to-do lists? I always assumed that’s a kind of naturally easy skill. But you’re not the first to ask me about exactly HOW do you make a to-do list. So maybe I’ll cover that too.

Cheers!

I am a new follower to your blog and it brings me much pleasure. I live with a chronic illness and completion of tasks can be so difficult. The trick for people such as myself is to know your limitations, make a list, don’t lose the list or forget about it, make list reasonable, attainable and don’t beat yourself up if your condition doesn’t allow you to meet your goals.
Great job on you first video. I look forward to seeing video 2.

@Kelli:
Wow, inspiring! Thanks for sharing.

As for video 2… well, not to get you too excited, but if everything goes as planned, I’ll have the next video recorded by professional video folks, with professional-grade equipment! Now it’s just up to me to provide professional-grade content :D

Hi Vlad. Good work on making your first video.

What program did you use to put together the video?
Windows movie maker?

You should edit out long pauses in your next videos. Some of them are good to let points embed for a while but there were an awful lot of long pauses. If your using movie maker click on the audio block in the time line then click a point on the time line and split it. You can take out chunks. Fade the audio together to get is smooth.

Apart from that, really good stuff. Looking forward to the next one.

Also, Kelli, my mum has chronic fatigue so I know exactly what your talking about. Making an achievable list and sticking to it is what it’s all about to not put yourself out.

Cheers,

Josh

I love your blog and all the advice you give. Its all in simpliar terms and can really be applied to real life. I am glad that we can finally see you and making videos is an intersting new twist, but i do enjoy reading what you have to say as well. In fact, i think i may prefer it as well. But that does not mean I like your blog any less. I think if I stick to what you have to say and keep up with your posts is will actually help me with my procrastion problem. Just want to say that before i ask my question which is completely irrelivant. But I am curious, where are you from? Your accent and name are very interesting. I’m guessing European something?
Michelle
P.S. Youre awesome
