Success! I am now officially on Uberman sleep schedule!
As you might remember, I hit a big slump on Monday with oversleeping for several hours, which caused me to re-evaluate what I’m doing and look for tips from other successful polysleepers.
Based on that, I’ve made a few changes to my routine, and this finally helped me get over the hump! Here’s exactly what I changed, how it affected me, and why the last few days have been totally awesome

It’s a while since I posted the last part of the HYFP series, but what can you do – my polyphasic sleep experiment happened to fall right in the middle of the series
This is very likely going to be the last part, because I only decided to share the most powerful and awesome ways to hardwire yourself for positivity, and I don’t want to dilute the effect by coming up with good-but-not-great ideas to extend the series. So if you’ve been waiting to hear all the different ideas before deciding which one you want to apply for 30 days, you can choose today!
The other parts are here, in case you missed them:
Aaand, off we go!
Keeping An Appreciation Journal
So far, we have covered two super-effective times when to hardwire yourself for positivity – in the morning (which sets your mood for the rest of the day), and every time a negative thought comes up (which gives you a very targeted approach for blasting away negativity).
Today, we’ll cover one other time that will give you a huge positivity return on a small investment of your time and energy – the evening. [click to continue…]

I’ve been a bit quiet over the last couple of days. This is mostly because I didn’t have anything especially interesting to report, and I felt like writing “feeling moderately awake” every day wouldn’t make for very interesting updates.
Well, today I have a more… uh… interesting update.
I overslept this morning. For about 5 hours.
While this seems like a major setback (and I did feel like crap about it for a few moments), it’s actually been a blessing in disguise. It’s forced me to take a good hard look at myself relating to this experiment. I also went and read through other successful polysleepers experiences (mostly Steve Pavlina‘s), in order to find some tips that might help me succeed in the adaptation. And I’m really glad I did that, because I learned some really important stuff! (Why didn’t I read through his sleep log before I started the switchover myself?)
(Well, now that I think about it, I wanted to start the experiment by myself, as a clean slate. I didn’t want to follow exactly in somebody else’s footsteps, because that would take away the joy of discovery and being an expedition leader. You can think of it as playing an adventure computer game. It’s much more fun to try to figure out things yourself and only occasionally look up advice when you’re completely stumped, than follow a step-by-step guide throughout.)
So today, I will share a couple of the things I’ve learned so far, as well as my plans for the future. [click to continue…]

The last two days have been iffy.
On the one hand, I got on top of the oversleeping problem. I started meticulously setting all 3 of my alarm clocks, every time I go to sleep
On the other hand, it seems like the two oversleeps set me back more than I thought. I spent most of the last two days feeling fairly tired, and less being enthusiastic and energetic. A bit like during the first few days of the switchover.

I overslept one of my naps.
For the second day in a row.
Specifically, both times I got really tired during the 7-11 sub-day, decided to throw in an extra nap and overslept. The first time, I slept for about 50 minutes. Today, I slept for over an hour.
Now, luckily it’s nowhere near as bad as some other people I’ve heard of who tried switching to Uberman sleep schedule, where they ended up oversleeping… and sleeping for some 8 hours! That would have set my progress back several days. But it still sucks.
Plus, I thought I was doing really well this time! Every other sub-day I’ve had moderate-to-high energy levels (as long as I took the night-time sub-days easy).
But I can’t ignore this oversleeping. It’s happened twice already. And if it keeps happening, it will slowly eat apart my whole experiment. So… bring it, tiredness! I am ready for battle… [click to continue…]

First of all, for all of you asking why I didn’t post an update yesterday – I felt like I didn’t have enough interesting stuff to share. My policy here on Fun Life Development is that I post when I have something interesting to share, not to keep up an arbitrary schedule.
(Plus, okay, I was feeling tired and lazy :p .)
Of course I won’t leave you hanging – here’s what happened on Day 4!

I wrote up my report for Day 2 around 2:00 last night.
Less than two hours later, I experienced the most mind-boggling incident of the whole experiment so far.
The 3:00-7:00 interval of Day 2
I’ve thought about how to write this up for you, and I decided to simply copy down what I wrote in my diary (where I keep track of what I’m doing in each interval during this experiment). Here it is, word-for-word. [With added comments in square brackets, like this one.] [click to continue…]

For all of you worried that I didn’t post an update because I fell asleep and slept through the whole day – don’t worry
The reason is much simpler – I didn’t post an update because I was honestly so busy doing fun and awesome stuff all day that I simply couldn’t find the time to write up the update and include all the details I wanted.
Well, it’s roughly 2:00 on Day 2 now, and I finally got around to writing up my experiences. (As you might remember, my days end at 7:00 and the next day starts at 7:20).
So enjoy this update, covering most of Day 1, and Day 2

It’s the first day of my experiment, and I wanted to share my progress so far.
I decided to call yesterday Day 0, because I had my last full nights’ sleep the night before (or, rather, some 4-5 hours of solid sleep).
That means that as I’m writing this, it is some 28 hours since my last big chunk of sleep. Since then, I have only been taking a 20-minute nap every four hours.
I decided to take my naps at 3:00, 7:00, 11:00, 15:00, 19:00 and 23:00, as that will cause the least interference with my lectures, and other time-dependent stuff I like to do in my free time (for example swing dancing).
Also, for ease of thinking, I consider each day to start at 7:20. Which conveniently aligns with right about when it’s getting light around here

I have a really exciting announcement today! (Well, it’s exciting for me, at least.)
Today, I am starting my switch to Uberman’s Sleep Schedule!
You can read the article linked above for more information, but basically, it involves taking a 20-minute nap every four hours, and that’s it. Which gives a total of 2 hours of sleep every 24-hour period. In other words, 22-hour days! [click to continue…]
